For casual driving, I generally let off the throttle and gently engage the brakes until the speed and revs come down for an appropriate gentle shift to the next gear down, and continue to do the same till second. Once I'm in low revs in second I am nearly stopped, so I just push in the clutch and finish the job with the brakes. For emergency stops, I generally slam on the brakes hard, and as the revs get close to idle I push in the clutch and continue holding the brakes. Depending on conditions, I may shift all the way down to second and clutch out or else just stand on the brakes until I am stopped. As long as your ABS is working properly, you can stand on the brakes and not have to worry about skidding out of control.
